Every time you go online, your device is handed a number called an IP address. It works like a return address: it tells every server you contact where to send the answer back. Ask what is my IP address and the honest answer has two halves, because the number itself is only the beginning of what your connection reveals.

Your IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique number that your Internet Service Provider gives to your device. Think of it like a phone number for your computer or mobile. Without this internet protocol address, you cannot browse websites, send emails, or watch videos online.
People come looking for this number for very different reasons. Some are confirming a VPN is actually routing their traffic. Some need the address for a firewall rule or a whitelist at work. Some have been blocked by a site and want to know why. The number is the same in every case; what differs is which of the details below actually matters to you.
Most pages of this kind stop at the number and the city. This one continues into the parts that decide how sites treat you: which network announces your address, whether that network is consumer broadband or a data center, and whether your browser is quietly leaking something your VPN was supposed to hide.

Every address has a rough geographic location attached to it, but not in the way most people assume. Nothing in the number itself encodes a place. The location comes from registry records showing which blocks a provider assigned to which region, cross-checked against traceroute measurements and latency data collected over years. Our geolocation lookup shows the record behind the estimate.
IP geolocation works by matching your address against those registry records and against traceroute data collected over time. The result is usually accurate to a city or a metropolitan area, and frequently off by 50 to 100 miles. It is an estimate built from routing, not a position read from a device.
Your provider hands you an address from a block it holds, and that block is registered wherever the provider chose to register it. A small town is served from equipment in the nearest city, so that is the city databases report. On mobile networks the gap widens, because carrier-grade NAT puts thousands of subscribers behind a handful of shared addresses. Most home connections also change address periodically, since DHCP leases expire; a static IP that never moves is normally a paid business option.

There is no single authority that grades an IP address. Every site that checks yours — a bank, a store, a game server, a signup form — runs its own read on the same handful of public facts. The number here is our read on those same facts, so you can see roughly what they see before they act on it.
Four things carry most of the weight.
A residential line from Comcast, Spectrum or Verizon is the strongest signal there is, because almost every real customer is on one. An address registered to a hosting company is the opposite: servers do not browse, so traffic from a data center is treated as automated until it proves otherwise. This is the single biggest factor, and it is also the one people are most often caught by without realizing — a cheap VPN usually puts you on a hosting range. Commercial VPN and proxy ranges are published and widely shared. Being on one is not wrongdoing, but it does mean the site cannot tell you apart from everyone else sharing that exit. The awkward case is the reverse: a residential proxy routes through somebody's real home connection, so at the network level it looks exactly like a home connection — and it passes this check, and most others. Spamhaus, Barracuda, SpamCop and the rest keep public lists of addresses linked to spam or abuse. A listing is the most concrete mark against an address, and also the most fixable, because every major list has a delisting process. It is a separate check with a real answer rather than an estimate, so it has its own tool: the blacklist check queries six active lists and tells you which one flagged you and why.
On mobile data, thousands of subscribers share one public address. Nothing you do affects that, and it counts only lightly here — but it explains why the same phone can breeze through a site on Wi-Fi and hit a CAPTCHA wall on cellular ten minutes later.
It means none of the four signals fired. That is good news, and it is not the same as proof. A residential proxy, a compromised home machine and an ordinary broadband line all score clean here, because at this level they look identical. If something important rests on the answer — you are about to approve a payment, or unblock an account — run the blacklist check alongside it and read the two together. Reputation is not permanent. Addresses recover, and listings expire.
The number above is probably not the same one you had last month. Whether that matters depends entirely on what you are trying to do.
Home connections almost always use a dynamic IP. Your router asks the provider for an address through DHCP and receives one on a lease that expires and renews. Reboot the router, or let the lease lapse, and you may come back with a different number. Providers do this because addresses are scarce and most subscribers never need a fixed one.
A static IP never changes. You need one if you are hosting a mail server, running a VPN endpoint others connect to, or sitting behind a corporate firewall rule that allows a specific address. It is normally a paid business option, and it makes you easier to identify precisely because it does not move.
Three ranges are reserved by RFC 1918 for private networks and never appear on the public internet: 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12 and 192.168.0.0/16. Your router hands one of these to every device in your home, then translates them all onto your single public address using NAT. That is why every device shows the same public number.
A fourth, 127.0.0.1, is the loopback address. It always means this machine and never leaves it, which is why localhost resolves there. And on mobile networks, CGNAT puts thousands of subscribers behind one shared public address, which is why phone connections are hard to geolocate and why an abuse report against a mobile address rarely identifies one person.
None of this is visible from the number alone. Working out which block an address belongs to, and who announces it, means checking the registry with a WHOIS lookup and the routing table with an ASN lookup. The scan above does both for your own address.
Networks are described in CIDR notation rather than as lists of individual addresses. The number after the slash says how many leading bits are fixed, which fixes the size of the block. It is worth recognising because firewall rules, allow lists and abuse reports are all written this way.

If the connection itself is the problem rather than the addressing, measure it directly: the ping test shows round-trip latency and packet loss, and the speed test measures actual throughput. Your device might use an IPv4 address, an IPv6 address, or both at the same time. Knowing the difference helps you understand your internet protocol better and find problems with your connection.
